MSA McGill's Mi'raj Leadership Program

"Be People of Excellence"

MSA McGill’s Mi’raj Leadership Program is designed to help Muslims achieve their full potential as individuals. The year-long program emphasizes balance, focus, and excellence in one’s life as the keys to success. Through interactive workshops, innovative teaching methods, and experienced speakers, participants learn some of the necessary skills and tools needed to improve personal habits, give back to society, and achieve their dreams.

Why “Mi’raj”?

The Arabic word means “ladder” or “stairs”, and is derived from a root meaning “to ascend, mount, rise.” The Mi’raj Leadership Program aims to help students climb the steps to success, and to unlock the best in each and every individual in their rise to the top. The word is also associated with a key event in Islamic history – Al-Mi’raj, the Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him!) to the Heavens. Among other miraculous sights and events, the Prophet was drawn close to God, and the command to pray the daily prayers was revealed. The journey is referred to in the Qur’an in Surah an-Najm (chapter 53).

Semester Focus:

The Fall 2011 semester focuses on personal leadership and management, and is designed to help participants define and pursue their dreams and goals. Part of this process also entails gaining control of one’s emotions, and knowing how to keep one’s spirituality alive. See the full Fall 2011 schedule here[link to detailed Fall schedule similar to that on the postcard]

The Winter 2012 semester focuses on communal leadership, and is centered around covering key issues facing Western Muslim communities. This semester is more discussion-based, and requires more participant interaction with the presentations, speakers, and other resources.

If you successfully complete the Mi’raj Leadership Program, you will receive a certificate of completion and be invited to attend the MSA’s Summer Leadership Retreat, a weekend-long trip with expert speakers in a number of fields and Muslim scholars. Reference letters attesting to participants’ skills and character will be available upon request.

Other information:

Schedule: All workshops are held in the Student Union building on McGill Campus on Saturday mornings (but not too early!). We have attempted to space the workshops throughout the semesters to accommodate student schedules. Times and locations are as consistent as possible to make planning ahead easier for you. However, in case of any unforeseen changes to the schedule, we will notify you well in advance.

Resources: Participants will be provided with the presentations and other resources as needed. While the only commitment required of participants is regular and timely attendance at the workshops, you are encouraged to follow-up on the extra resources in order to enhance your experience.

Commitment: In the spirit of excellence, we expect participants to attend regularly and to arrive on time. Workshops will start and end promptly. If you frequently miss sessions, it will be to your own detriment as all the workshops flow from one another – missing one makes it hard to catch up.

Cost: No more than $20-$25 (final price to be confirmed). With over 12 workshops planned, that’s less than $2 per workshop. Pretty good deal eh?
